Nakhon Pathom
is one of Thailand’s most ancient cities, once a vital part of the thousand-year-old Dvaravati Kingdom. The city is home to the majestic Phra Pathom Chedi – the largest and most striking stupa in Thailand, standing as a timeless symbol of faith and heritage. Beyond its rich history, Nakhon Pathom offers vibrant community experiences and exciting cultural activities, take a boat to see the lotus field, making Thai local snack that invite every traveler to discover them!
Phra Pathom Chedi: Thailand’s Grandest Stupa
Phra Pathom Chedi is recognized as the largest stupa in Thailand and one of the most historically significant religious landmarks in the country. Formerly known as Phra Thommachedi, its origins date back to the ancient Suvarnabhumi era, believed to have been constructed during the time when Buddhist missionaries, sent by Emperor Ashoka of India, arrived to spread Buddhism in the region.
The original structure was built in an inverted bell shape, made of massive wooden logs bound with large iron chains and then covered with bricks. Over time, the structure deteriorated until it was rediscovered in a ruined state by King Rama IV (King Mongkut) during his monkhood. He initiated the first major restoration of the chedi, which marked the beginning of its transformation into the monumental religious site we see today.
Phra Pathom Chedi stands as a powerful symbol of Thailand’s deep-rooted Buddhist heritage and continues to be a spiritual center for both locals and visitors.
Phra Ruang Rojanarit
A revered Sukhothai-style standing Buddha image in the “Pacifying the Relatives” posture. Located within Phra Pathom Chedi, this statue is a spiritual landmark of Nakhon Pathom. Commonly known as “Luang Pho Phra Ruang,” it is a place of worship for both locals and visitors seeking blessings.
Circular Cloister (Rabiang Kot)
Surrounding the base of Phra Pathom Chedi is a circular cloister, or Rabiang Kot, which encloses the stupa in a graceful ring. At the four cardinal points, there are directional viharns (chapels). Inside the cloister lies a circumambulatory walkway, leading upward through stepped terraces toward the chedi’s base.
Buddha Images in Various Postures
Surrounding Phra Pathom Chedi, visitors will find Buddha images in various postures, each representing different moments in the Buddha’s life. Informative signs are placed near each statue, making it easy for visitors to read and understand their meanings.
Ubosot Luang & Luang Pho Prathan Phon
The Main Ordination Hall (Ubosot Luang) features modern architecture, restored during the reign of King Rama VII under the direction of Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong.
Inside, the principal Buddha image is Luang Pho Prathan Phon, a large white stone Buddha in the Maravijaya (Victory over Mara) posture, resembling the southern-facing Buddha image nearby. This sacred image is highly revered by visitors and devotees alike.

The process of making dried rice mixed with watermelon juice, local wisdom
…. Originating from a traditional Thai snack, Khao Taen was originally created as a way to preserve leftover sticky rice, especially in Northern Thailand. Later, the recipe was enhanced by mixing watermelon juice into the rice to add natural sweetness and color. This innovation gave rise to “Khao Taen Nam Tangmo,” a unique local specialty of Lampang Province, particularly in Ban Thung Man Nuea village.
